Recce Report for Revenge

Recce Report
Location 1: Oriel Avenue
Oriel Avenue I think Oriel Avenue would be a good place to shoot Gilbert being picked up by Tyler and his gang. Oriel Avenue just has this old-school feel to it. It has the well known Oriel High School down the road which has gained a reputation for drugs and bullying which local members of the audience will connect with immediately when the shot is taken. Furthermore the school it’s self is bordered by rather menacing chain metal-fences which can be included in the shot without actually including the image of the school. The road it’s self is a shabby sub-urban like area (mostly council-owned) which helps maintain the uneasy atmosphere when Gilbert is picked up.
Location 2: The Back Alleys of Baliol Road
Baliol as many locals will tell you is one of the roughest streets in Gorleston and Great Yarmouth. It has a system of back-alleys which set the perfect atmosphere for one of Ryan’s killings. It would be shot during the night as the scene requires the victim Jacob to be stalked through the alley at night before the brutal fight taking place in which he is slaughtered by Ryan.
Location 3: The Allotments behind the Recreation Ground
The allotments behind the Recreation Ground are the perfect place to strike an ambush on the unsuspecting Gilbert. Also the rough rural surroundings make it unclear exactly where it is being filmed, leaving it up to the audience’s imaginations where he is being murdered. The general layout of the atmosphere in which he is being murdered would suggest it is not somewhere people come often, so it would probably be somewhere the gang could leave his body without anybody finding it.

Characters for Revege

Character Synopsis

Tyler McCarthy
Tyler McCarthy is a smug and vein boy with a cruel and sadistic sense of humor  He comes from a wealthy background and has been constantly spoiled. He lives a wild and rebellious life going to parties, drinking heavily, having one-night stands with women and occasionally taking drugs. He has a girlfriend (Amanda Brunette) who shares his sadistic and vein nature. Both are sexually motivated and egotistical. Tyler has his girlfriend by his side at all time accept from when he is out with his ‘best mate’ Jacob Smith, where he often goes and pulls and then sleeps with other girls behind his girlfriends back. His ego is what causes him to torment and eventually kill Gilbert. He is sexually motivated, and constantly has his hands all over his girlfriend at all times she is around him (who being a vein, sexually motivated person herself, doesn't mind much). He pressures Jacob in to doing bad things such as taking drugs and hurting Gilbert. He putts on a brave face but deep down is a coward (However not as much so as Jacob). Despite his big ego his girlfriend often is the one who leads him to do wrong with her seductive charm however he always takes it too far, and when others (sometimes including his girlfriend) try to stop him he simply continues. This is what inevitably leads to Gilbert’s death. He deserves to die first however dies last.

Amanda Brunette
Amanda Brunette is a cruel, seductive teenage girl shares in her boyfriend’s sick sense of humor and need for sexual interaction. Little to her boyfriend’s knowledge she knows she is constantly being cheated on, however without her boyfriend knowing she often goes around sleeping with many other boys her age and occasionally males much older than her. She is very vein and is constantly seeking the sexual attention of males. She often leads males on, particularly sexually desperate young men such as Jacob, playing games in their heads and making them all jealous of her boyfriend’s and other male’s privilege. She was taken advantage of sexually at a young age and had an extremely abusive child hood, which makes the audience sympathize with her when she is killed by Gilbert’s brother Ryan Cartman. She lives much the rebellious life of her boyfriend, taking drugs, drinking, joy-riding and often smoking weed with him. She constantly wants sex with him, and despite sleeping with other men herself, she finds herself being violently jealous of her boyfriend’s interest in other women and so craves his attention constantly touching him, kissing him and groping him and trying to obtain his sexual attention.

Jacob Smith
Jacob Smith is cowardly in nature, and has picked up his sick sense of humor from the friends he is surrounded by (particularly Tyler). His father is an abusive alcoholic and his mother sleeps around. He was bullied as a young boy and is always bullied and peer-pressured by his ‘best friend’ Tyler to do things he shouldn't  He is jealous of Tyler as he has strong feelings for his Amanda Brunette who often teases him. He has a kind girlfriend, Jessica, who always tries to steer him in the right direction but always fails. Jacob is sexually frustrated as he sees his best friend and his girlfriend are very sexually active but has no sex himself as Jessica chooses to remain celibate. Despite having a seemingly scummy appearance and personality he does not cheat on Jessica as he simply cannot bring himself to do it even when Tyler pressures him too. Jacob is a virgin. He joins in torturing Gilbert and uses him as a body on which to let out all of his frustration. All in all Jacob is a frustrated, troubled and confused young man, with a sick tendency.

Jessica Adams
Jessica Adams is unlike the others in her group. She is kind and considerate, never drinks, smokes, takes drugs and is celibate. She loves her family and cares about her friends no matter how horrible they are, and always stands by her boyfriend. She works hard managing to keep down two part-time jobs and study four A-levels. She is very shy, and has no other friends so is forced to tag along with them or be alone. She is totally against their mistreatment of Gilbert, often intervening to stop them from hurting him and then returning to comfort him after they have finished. She defends him to the last-even trying to stop them when they are killing him, but is overpowered by Tyler and is forced to stand down. She dresses in attire completely different to Amanda. Whereas Amanda wears skimpy clothes to attract the eyes of men, Jessica wears thick jumpers and jeans and sensible footwear. She tries to blend in while Amanda tries to stand out. Overall Jessica is strong-willed, sensible, kind and career-minded.

Gilbert Cartman
Gilbert is a troubled young man. He is very shy and constantly bullied; he spends most of his time in the computer rooms and library alone. His main Bullies are Amanda, Jacob and most of all Tyler McCarthy.  He is a big video-game player and third best in the world at World of Warcraft. He has a twin Brother called Ryan who is mentally unstable, but who loves him very much and when he can, defends him from bullies at every opportunity. Gilbert also has a respectable Mother and Father who love him very much. He doesn't swear, drink, smoke or take drugs the same as Jessica. He has a kind nature, but is frightfully shy and is cowardly.

Ryan Cartman
Gilbert has a twin brother named Ryan. Ryan is incredibly mentally unstable. When he’s not in Broad moor  he spends all his time studying and practicing martial arts and fighting sports. He knows how to use close combat weapons in horrifying detail. He is very physically fit being incredibly fast mentally and physically. He has a rugged appearance and voice however is extremely intelligent. He hates his Mother and Father for putting him in Broad moor but loves is brother immensely. He has an extremely short temper and when he is pushed things turn ugly and escalate rapidly. When he hears of his brother’s death He has the biggest psychotic breakdown he’s ever experienced wanting only the revenge of his brother in the form of brutal, bloody murder.

Costumes For Revenge

Costumes/ Prop List

Amanda Brunette :

Costume
Amanda wears attire that reflects upon her slutty personality. She wears mini-skirts and tracksuit bottoms. She wears lots of ‘bling’ and fairly heavy makeup. She wears hoops through her ears. She dresses in a way which is revealing in a sexual way but rather than exposing her as a complete tart she is still seen as beautiful. As well as being seen in this ‘tarty’ way she is also seen in an attractive way-the eye candy for the male audience.
Props
She may have a handbag to signify her need to act feminine around boys.

Tyler McCarthy :

Costume
Tyler is rough but vein and so wears vein clothes. Everything he has is designer or costumed like his rucksack for example. He has his hair all gelled to give it a messy look, this helps reflect on his messed-up and ragged personality.
Props
He has a base ball bat to beat Gilbert up with, and which is also the ultimate tool for Gilbert’s death. He only has it In Gilbert’s death scene.

Jacob Smith :

Costume
Jacob tries to dress like his ‘best mate’ Tyler, so ends up wearing the same sort of designer clothes. He doesn’t have the same sort of vanity though, so does not have his own custom made effects such as Tyler’s rucksack. He has his hair glued up like sonic the hedgehog and
Props
He owns very good quality headphones and a rather ‘camp’ (or what the audience would perceive to be camp) rucksack.

Jessica Adams :

Costume
Jessica wears non revealing clothes because she doesn’t want to give away too much of her body. Unlike Amanda, Jessica is reserved, and is also a virgin. She is well-brought up from a middle class family and is well-educated, and this is to be reflected in her clothing. She dresses smart but casual, rather than Amanda who tries her best to wear next to nothing to provoke male attention, Jessica does almost the opposite.
Props
She has no significant props on her in the trailer

Gilbert Cartman :

Costume
Gilbert wears plain clothes. Despite being the character of sympathy in the film, he is rather geeky. He wears plain jeans and granddad jumpers.
Props
As for Props, Gilbert doesn’t really have any specifically in the trailer because most of his parts in the trailer involve him being beaten up or bullied on the spot without any effects; however in the film he would have a laptop, man bag and books.

Tyler Cartman :

Costume
Tyler dresses ‘bad-ass’ because he is insane and vey aggressive and dangerous. Again, his characteristics must be reflected in his clothing. He wears what is known as ‘Granddad tops’ and plain shirts, and vest tops. He wears blue jeans and brown suede boots. H      e has a creepy black leather jacket and a cropped haircut. All of these give him an aggressive, hard and creepy image.
Props
In some of the killing scenes he has a knife, in which he uses to slit one of the other student’s throats.

History of Horror Character

Frederick Charles "Freddy" Krueger is a fictional character created by Wes Craven, and is the main antagonist and a killer from the slasher film series A Nightmare of Elm Street. When he was burned to death in 1968 by the citizens of spring-wood, he was offered the spot as "Dream Killer" from the demons who live in the depths of hell. His biological mother, Amanda Krueger was a nun, who gave birth to Freddy after she was raped hundreds of times while visiting a mental institution. Through his childhood, he was sent from orphanage to orphanage, where he constantly endured humiliation by children, who thought of him as a freak.
He uses this new career of his to his advantage to murder the children of his killers in their dreams. as long as his victims were dreaming, Krueger could inhabit and control their dreams, twisting them to his own ends. He is also capable of entering a victim's mind via state of intoxication, whether the victim is drunk or stoned. Any physical harm done to a person in this dream world would carry over into the real world, though exactly how differs significantly between films, allowing him to easily commit multiple murders. he has everything that a horror character needs and why his character is so successful in the horror genre.

Full Film Analysis (Halloween)

Halloween

Over twenty years after its initial release, John Carpenter's Halloween remains one of the most viscerally frightening motion pictures ever conceived. Written, produced and filmed on a shoestring budget, it was a huge financial success and is still considered one of the best independent film success stories in the history of the movies. Many sequels and more recently modern remakes by musician/director Rob Zombie have not been able to match the original's perfect blend suspense and unrelenting terror. The sequels in particular proving that simply upping the violence and gore do not make for a more horrifying experience. The third piece of the puzzle is the film's direction itself. This movie made Carpenter a household name and with good reason. Carpenter's work is a large part of the movie's success. His steady-cam work would lends an eerie vibe to even the most normal scene. His use of long, wide shots make the audience unwilling participants in the voyeurism. Contrary to some criticisms of the time, it does not make one sympathize with the killer. The viewer is made nervous to be in such proximity to the viewpoint of the antagonist. Halloween is the rare horror movie that gets better with repeated viewings. Long after you have memorized every line of dialog and know every scene by heart, the movie is still immensely enjoyable to view. Its concepts and craftsmanship still have the ability to send chills down the spine. When the last sounds of Myers breathing and the final frames of his old house close, the viewer is left with a feeling of complete dread and despair that "The Shape" is still out there, able to take form. The viewer is also left with a feeling of admiration for quality film-making rarely seen today.

Full Film Analysis (The Shining)

The Shining

The re-release of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is another chance to savoir, first of all, those magnificent interior sets. Instead of the cramped darkness and panicky quick editing of the standard-issue scary movie, Kubrick gives us the eerie, colossal, brilliantly lit spaces of the Overlook Hotel (created in Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire), shot with amplitude and calm. It looks like an abandoned city, or the state rooms of the Titanic, miraculously undamaged at the bottom of the ocean. There's pure inspiration simply in the scene in which young Danny (Danny Lloyd) rides his tricycle around the endless corridors, the wheels thundering on the wooden floor, then suddenly quiet over the carpets. And this is before he sees the strange little girls. Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall play Danny's parents, Jack and Wendy, who have the live-in job of care taking a gigantic resort hotel while it is closed for the winter. But the place is drenched in the memory of a violent past, and the horror and trauma rise inexorably to the surface. The unhurried pace, extended dialogue scenes and those sudden, sinister inter-titles ("One Month Later", "4 pm") contribute to the insidious unease. Nicholson's performance as the abusive father who is tipped over the edge is a thrillingly scabrous, black-comic turn, and the final shot of his face in daylight is a masterstroke. The Shining doesn't look like a genre film. It looks like a Kubrick film, bearing the same relationship to horror as Eyes Wide Shut does to eroticism. The elevator-of-blood sequence, which seems to "happen" only in premonitions, visions and dreams, was a logistical marvel. Deeply scary and strange.

Horror Trailer Analysis (Final Destination)

Final Destination

This horror trailer uses effects I have not seen in any other horror movie yet. This trailer constantly uses fading transitions as opposed to sharp scary cuts. Bird’s eye view shots are used to show the characters struggle and the voice over is of the main characters remembrance of an earlier conversation, and as he recalls each part: what is said, happens. Similarly to this effect, another character mocks what the main character says-but as he says it, it happens. This sense of irony is what makes the trailer so horrific to watch. Flashes of clips with inverted colour are shown and pathetic fallacy is used to predict the bad events of the movie. I feel this movie gives too much away as the trailer consists of a lot of different clips from the movie.

Horror Trailer Analysis (The Possession)

The possession

The trailer for 'The Possession' begins with a soft piano sound denoting a calm, normal atemosphere. The long shot of the house is used to show the iscolated house surrounded by trees, which is a typical convention of a horror film. The scene cuts to clips of the Father and his Daughter smiling and having fun which denotes the 'carefree' and simple lifestyle they have now, showing a clear contrast between the beginning and the end of the trailer, which is typically how a horror trailer begins. The voice over of the Mother again emphasises the normality of the family and their lifestyle, she is saying typical things a Mother would e.g. 'no pizza'. The birdseye shot of Father and Daughter lying together shows that they are inferior, they are clueless of what is to come. The family visit a car boot sale together where the young girl dresses up in white accessessories, the colour white may denote the purity and vulnerability of the young girl which is a typical convention of a horror film as the victim is usually an innocent character. The young girl spots an ancient box, many shots are used with a fade transition to emphasise how happy she is to have found it, getting closer to her face each shot fade to show her emotion. The lighting of the scenes become dim and gloomy, the non-diagetic voice over of the Father saying 'whoever made this didn't want anybody to open it' gives the box a sense of mystery and 'unknown'. The music changes as the girl opens the box, showing the change between the normality of her lifestyle and how it's now going to change since she's opened the box. Like any usual horror film, the cuts become fast paced and sharp to highlight the distress and worry the parents have about their child. The non-diagetic sound of the fork tapping the plate is used to build tension for the audience, which also sounds like a clock ticking, insinuating the concept of time is significant, somethings going to happen after a period of time. The clips become much faster pace and shorter as the climax of the situation builds, showing the girl tapping the plate as well as the Fathers reaction, making the attack appear out of nowhere and spontaneous. The next scene is night time, which is a typical convention of a horror film as most occurences happen late at night. The shot reverse shot of the young girl and the box hints to the audience that something strange is about to occur. The scene cuts to the next day where the girl states that she feels 'weird'. The cuts become fast paced as more abnormal things start to occur, building tension for the audience. The close up shot of Em's face implies she has been stripped of her vulnerability, she is not the innocent young girl we saw at the beginning. Various fast paced cuts are shown so the audience can see the new possessed Emily. The music changes to a soft hymn-like tune denoting that she has been possessed by something to do with religion, however making the trailer more 'creepy' by doing so. The box becomes center frame emphasising it's importance however not giving the whole storyline away, which seems to be based around the 'unknown' box itself. The music cresendos to then come to a complete stop, which will create a tense atmosphere for the audience. The scene cuts to Emily in the bathroom, the non-diagetic voice over of her Mother saying 'there's something in her' showing two fingers coming out Emily's throat, leaving a sense of mystery with the audience as they don't know what's inside of her.

Horror Trailer Analysis (The Unborn)

The Unborn

  • The Unborn trailer follows Todorov’s narrative theory: Period of equilibrium starts at the beginning when we see an establishing shot of the house Moment of disequilibrium is shown when we see the main female (Casey) sees the child/spirit in the street. Period of disequilibrium begins when Casey starts to watch the film. Propp’s character theory is shown in trailer: The female protagonist Child/spirit is (Casey) is the victim/hero the villain The Vicar is the helper The male gaze is also shown through the shower scene. However, the feminist theory is shown as the protagonist is seen wanting to overcome being possessed or haunted by the child. The Unborn trailer creates a scary atmosphere through sound, editing, camera angles and shots. Sound-The diegetic sound of the whispering through the baby monitor. This can suggest that there is something mentally wrong with the child. The moments of high-pitched non-diegetic sound creates an eerie atmosphere and makes it uncomfortable for the audience. There are also moments of silence which creates a sinister atmosphere making the audience feel uneasy. Some of the voices in the trailer are not clear and understandable, this creates a fear of the unknown in the audiences mind. Editing-There are many fades throughout the trailer, which gives the trailer a continuous feel. During the latter stages the pace of the trailer speeds up, this is done through jump cuts. The jump cuts creates an irritating effect for the audience and puts the audience at an edge. Camera angles and shots-There are a number of different camera angles, some are canted angles , these create an alarming atmosphere for the audience. There are also a variation of shot types, the first shot is an establishing shot showing the isolated setting. There are some of over-the-shoulder shots, in which the audience is positioned alongside the protagonist. There is an extreme close-up of the protagonists eye, which is symbolic to the plot of the film. There are also a number of point-of-view shots which place the audience in the protagonist position and make the audience emphasis with her.
